The “Run to Honor” will take place in conjunction with the  Marine Corps Marathon and 10k on 25 October 2009.  You can participate either as runner in the marathon/10K, or cheering on runners from the sidelines and/or as an attendee at a memorial dinner the night before. Run To Honor is a memorial event held in conjunction with the Marine Corps Marathon and 10k in Washington DC. The purpose is to honor the lives, leadership, and legacy of Naval Academy graduates who have given their lives in service to our country.

The Naval Academy Class of 1995 organized the inaugural event in 2007 to honor six shipmates who were lost in operations.  The Class of '95 again conducted the Run To Honor in 2008 and has expanded the 2009 event to honor fallen graduates from all  Naval Academy classes. 

The 2009 Run To Honor will include a memorial dinner on Saturday, October 24th, followed by the marathon and 10k on Sunday, October 25th.   Naval Academy graduates and Midshipmen, along with family and friends of Naval Academy graduates and Midshipmen, are all invited to participate as runners, supporters, and guests at the memorial dinner.  Remote participation will be encouraged for anyone unable to travel to Washington DC for the Marine Corps Marathon and 10k. In 2007 and 2008, dozens of runners participated remotely, including participants in Afghanistan, Iraq, Australia, and aboard the forward deployed USS Theodore Roosevelt.

While Run To Honor is a memorial event at its core, participants and supporters will also be invited to raise funds to contribute to the memory of our honorees.

We invite interested participants (runners, supporters, sponsors, volunteers) to take the following actions:

1) Send an email to RunToHonor@gmail.com to be added to the distribution list.
2) Participants must register for the race at www.marinemarathon.com on April 1st.  Slots fill up quickly.
3) Join our Facebook Group called "Run To Honor".

5) Spread the word by forwarding this email to other potential participants.
6) Please send an email to the organizers at RunToHonor@gmail.com if you know of any person, group, or company that would like to be a sponsor.  Sponsorship will include recognition in pre-race communications and at the memorial dinner.  Proceeds will pay for the venue and allow us to cover event costs for participating family members of fallen shipmates.
