Navy 18 - Rutgers 9

Navy jumps out to a big early lead and cruises to the win!
(June 22, 2009)

Navy exploded for 16 runs in the top of the first inning and held on to earn a big 18-9 victory over Rutgers in their first-ever meeting in the Capital Alumni Network (CAN) Coed Alumni Softball league

The Yard Dawgs came out swinging to start the game, pounding out 16 hits, cycling through the order twice and ending the first inning with a commanding 16-0 lead.  In their first at-bats, 9 of 10 Navy batters scored at least one run (the first 7 hitters each scored twice) and 9 of 10 Yard Dawgs contributed an RBI.

Rutgers didn't mount much of a threat after the first inning, but displayed some solid hitting of their own to earn 2 runs in the 2nd inning, 4 runs in the 4th, and 3 runs in the 6th.  Navy's only scoring after their opening salvo came on a 2-run home run from Ed Malinowski('02) in the 5th frame.

Stars of the Game:  Ed Malinowski('02) paced the Navy offense, going 4 for 5 with 2 singles, a double, a home run, 3 runs scored and 4 RBI's. Mike McAneny('91) matched Ed with a 4 for 5 night, contributing 3 singles, a double, 2 runs scored and 3 RBI's.  For the women, Jenni  Washburn ('01) helped set the table for the middle of the order, going 3 for 5 with 3 singles, 3 runs scored and 1 RBI.  On defense, Al Lamson('84) became the team-record sixth Navy pitcher to take the mound this season.  Al pitched a solid first-ever game for the Yard Dawgs, ending with a respectable 2.50 Walks/Hits per Innings Pitched (WHIP).

Fun Facts:
- Navy's 16 runs in the first inning matched their largest total output in any single game this season.
- "Old Dawgs": Navy put its most experienced team on the field for this game, with 6 of 10 starters graduating from USNA in 1991 or earlier and only 2 of 12 players under 30 years of age!

Next Up:  Navy will play a challenging double-header against regional rivals Virginia and Maryland, two Final-Four teams from the 2008 tournament, starting at 10:30am on Saturday, June 27 at the NASA Goddard softball fields in Greenbelt, MD
